Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gradually establishing itself in every field, helping people solve simple tasks quickly, allowing them to use their time more effectively. As a result, knowledge of AI tools has become one of the most important and necessary skills in the labor market. AI has also entered the creative field, offering intriguing opportunities in graphic design by reducing the time spent on labor-intensive and routine tasks, thus giving more time for creative thinking. Given these trends, we’ve developed a new course at Commschool—AI in Graphic Design—led by Joni Kvezereli. Check out the blog and discover the prospects for integrating artificial intelligence into graphic design. Joni's career started in film directing—he has always been interested in visual work and observing how art affects people. His first work experience was in an advertising agency, where he learned more about how to consider customer needs and desires and realize ideas. Seeking more independence and creative freedom, Joni began freelancing. This path gave him the opportunity to work on various projects, helping him refine his skills and develop his unique style. Later, Joni’s interest shifted toward graphic design. Since childhood, he has been fascinated by visual art and its creative processes. He was always drawing, creating, and searching for new ways to better express his ideas. Currently, he works at Redberry, while also pursuing his passion for using AI in visual art. AI in Everyday Work Since primitive models for generating visuals first appeared on the market around 2018-2019, the use of AI has become part of Joni’s daily work. As children, we all probably dreamed of abstract tools that would allow us to easily bring our ideas or visual concepts to paper. This childhood dream became a reality when I first generated an image that was 200 by 200 pixels. It was almost impossible to make out what was depicted, but it was clear that, with a bit more refinement, these tools would become far more important than they first appeared. Joni started by using Stable Diffusion and other AI tools that allowed for the automatic generation and modification of visual materials. Initially, it was just an attempt to understand how these technologies could be used in design. Over time, he noticed that AI tools not only simplified the work process but significantly improved results, leaving more time for creative thinking. He successfully applied AI in a particularly interesting Georgian project. Joni created the first AI-generated postage stamp for Georgian Post using Stable Diffusion. The challenge of the project was to synthesize existing visuals to create something new, a task that is difficult even with the tools available on the market. AI in Graphic Design 8 Lectures | 24 Hours | 4 Weeks syllabus Reddit is one of the best places where I read about AI technologies and participate in discussions. From there, I often get important information that helps me understand how others are using AI technologies and how I can apply these approaches in my work process. YouTube, Pinterest, Behance, Reddit—these are the platforms Joni turns to for inspiration. He believes that there are limitless resources around us that we sometimes fail to see. The sources of inspiration are boundless if you search for them properly. It’s important to seek references everywhere—in museums, nature, architecture, and everyday life. Why AI in Graphic Design Has Become Necessary As Joni notes, the need to use AI in graphic design arose for several key reasons:Time and Efficiency: Design processes often require a lot of time and effort, especially for detailed work. AI tools automate these processes, allowing designers to save time and resources and complete tasks more efficiently.Improved Quality: AI enables the creation of visual materials with higher quality. AI technologies ensure the production of precise and detailed works, increasing the professionalism and quality of designers' output.Expanded Creativity: AI tools allow designers to create new and unique visual ideas that might be difficult or labor-intensive using traditional methods, especially during brainstorming when testing every possible option. This enhances designers' creativity and innovation.Inspiration Source: AI can generate a variety of visual content, providing designers with inspiration and ideas for new projects. These technologies help discover new styles and techniques. It’s important to remember that AI is a tool that, without our ideas, is just empty code. Therefore, learning design principles and mastering working methods is essential for choosing the right tools. AI Tools in Graphic Design One of the leading tools in the field of generative AI is Stable Diffusion, which has various functions. Stable Diffusion allows for the creation of high-quality and detailed visual images and patterns, offering an unlimited degree of control over the visuals that other AI tools do not provide. It can process both photos and graphic images, standing out for its fast and efficient algorithms that facilitate process automation and optimization. It’s best to start using Stable Diffusion by learning its basic functions and practical examples. To use this tool effectively, you need to understand its interface and capabilities. Since Stable Diffusion is a versatile and flexible tool, you can begin with basic features like image generation, quality enhancement, concept creation, manipulation, and more. AI tools give designers the opportunity to try new techniques and styles, which enhances their professional development and creativity. By simplifying collaborative opportunities, AI facilitates teamwork, leading to more diverse and innovative work. Thus, AI tools not only do not limit but significantly enhance designers’ creativity, raising their work to a higher level. AI tools truly boost designers' creativity. First and foremost, by automating tasks, they save time and resources, allowing designers to dedicate more energy to the creative process. AI technologies also provide sources of inspiration, generating unique ideas and encouraging the discovery of new directions. They make it easier to complete complex and challenging tasks, enabling designers to take on more ambitious projects. AI in Graphic Design - About the Course As mentioned, at Commschool you can discover a new course that will serve as a guide for graphic designers on how to incorporate AI into their work. According to Joni, the course will be highly practical and intensive, helping students acquire the skills to use AI technologies in graphic design. The program includes both theoretical and practical parts, allowing participants to apply the theoretical foundations to real projects. Throughout the course, you will be introduced to the basic theoretical concepts of AI and graphic design. Skills Needed for a Motion Graphics Designer
Even an untrained eye would likely notice that the modern digital world is full of high-quality moving effects, which are the responsibility of a motion designer. A motion designer is responsible for bringing graphic elements to life and possessing enough creativity to turn a simple theoretical idea into an attractive moving element on a computer screen. But is creative thinking enough to become a successful motion designer? To answer this question, I want to talk about 5 key skills that distinguish a motion designer! 1.Knowledge of Graphic Design To become a good motion graphics designer, it's important to be well-versed in graphic design tools such as: ● Adobe Photoshop ● Adobe Illustrator Knowledge of these will help you create appealing graphics that you can then animate in After Effects. In other words, they will provide significant assistance in creating colors and attractive designs during the animation process. 2.Typography - Attractive Printed Text You'd probably agree that content is made attractive not only by the animation of beautiful graphics but also by the font of the text and its proper distribution. Therefore, it's important to properly and beautifully distribute and animate key words provided by the client (e.g., a marketer), such as slogans or campaign names. This way, you can easily convey the message to the consumer. Consequently, it's essential for a motion designer to have the ability to create simple, unique, and visually appealing printed text. 3. Creative Thinking Since we've talked so much about attractive content, I think you won't be surprised if I tell you that creative thinking skills are essential for a motion designer. Creativity helps a motion graphics designer to: ● Create new visuals ● Show alternative ways to solve problems ● Add individuality, which is indeed a key to great success in this field! 5. Good Communication Skills In today's world, it's not surprising that any professional activity requires good communication skills, and motion graphics is no exception. Effective communication becomes particularly important when the designer has to talk to a technically "non-designer" client, during which it's their responsibility to convey the appropriate content visuals to the client in a simple and understandable manner. What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is a profession that uses visual images to convey ideas and main messages to a target audience. You'll encounter this form of communication everywhere in the digital era today - on billboards, product packaging, or mobile applications. Using various techniques and principles, graphic imagery can have a significant impact on our perceptions, emotions, and decisions.Companies connect with their customers through graphic designers. Using text, design, and photographs, they advertise and sell their products and create brand identity. In other words, this field combines art and business, creative process and commercial goals. If you're interested in graphic design and want to develop in this direction, you've come to the right place. Read the blog where I'll tell you more about this direction and introduce you to the diverse career opportunities this field offers. What elements does graphic design consist of? The elements and principles of graphic design include line, color, shape, space, texture, typography, scale, dominance, and balance. Their unity creates a visually striking and attractive image that effectively conveys the main message.Line - It's a component of almost every design and comes in various forms: straight, curved, long, short, narrow, thick... It helps to divide space, as well as to draw attention in a specific direction.Color - It can be said that it's the most important and obvious, most easily noticeable part of the design. It can make an immediate impression because everyone notices and perceives it. Color can be used as a background or in an element (line, shape, text). It creates emotion and character. For example, green is associated with nature, while yellow can evoke positive emotions.Shape - A combination of lines such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle, and other abstract forms. You'll encounter at least one in every design. Like colors, shapes also evoke different associations in people. For example, a circle expresses unity, while a square expresses structure. The color, style, background, and outline of a shape can influence human perception.Space - White or negative space in graphic design refers to the empty space left around or within shapes. It's given great importance because it simplifies and improves the perception of the work for the human eye.Texture - Different materials are now often used in design: paper, stone, concrete, brick, fabric. With these, you can create diverse and interesting three-dimensional images.Typography - When working with text, a graphic designer should consider two factors and the relationship between them: what the text says and how it looks. Typography is the arrangement of text in such a way that it's easy to understand, perceive, and attractive. In this case too, different fonts evoke different emotions. Therefore, it's necessary to choose it correctly to have a strong visual effect on the viewer.Scale - It's used to create visual hierarchy, which makes the image more dynamic. With it, you can more clearly highlight important information and emphasize them.Dominance - Highlighting a part of the design. Outline, contrast, isolation, and other techniques are used for this.Balance - A balanced design leaves a sense of stability, while an unbalanced one can have a dynamic effect. Balance is achieved by correct placement of shapes, colors, lines, and other elements. Harmony - It's one of the main goals of a graphic designer. Good design means that each component of it complements each other and together they effectively fulfill their purpose. However, if everything is similar to each other, the design can turn out monotonous and boring. To avoid this, it's important to maintain a balance between harmony and contrast. What types of graphic design exist? There are different types of graphic and UX design and specializations. Each requires different techniques and skills.Visual Identity (Branding) - This direction works on the visual side of the brand. Its goal is to convey the company's identity using photographs, shapes, and colors. Graphic designers working in this direction create logos, typography, color palettes, images that express the brand. They also develop guidelines, recommendations to ensure identity is protected in any form of use.Marketing and Advertising - Used to sell services and products to create different types of advertising. For example, posters, billboards, flyers, catalogs, packaging, or digital advertising (video, social network post). Designers working in this direction create graphics for marketing strategies and campaigns. They create designs for the target audience, so they need to understand well how the product sells and how to attract consumers' attention.Web Design - Planning and creating the design, structure, and scheme of websites. It focuses on the external side and user experience (UX). Web designers use various visual elements (text, photo, graphics, video) to create easily usable websites for users. Web design is closely related to UX and UI design.Publishing - Selection of typography and art samples (from photography, illustrations, graphic works) for publications. A graphic designer working in this direction works on the visual side of books, newspapers, magazines, and catalogs. They need to know how to use colors effectively, as well as printing and digital publications.Packaging - Packaging not only protects the item, but it's also an important marketing tool. Graphic designers create the model and print-ready file. They need to know well how the printing process works, industrial design and production. They should actively study existing trends, their competitors' strategies to stand out for consumers in this regard.Motion Graphic Design - It's a new direction in graphic design, but rapidly growing and in demand. It creates moving graphics: animations, video games, trailers, credits.Environmental, Interior - It's a multidisciplinary direction that combines graphic, architectural, industrial, interior, and landscape design. It connects people with the environment. Generally, designers working in this direction have knowledge and experience in graphic design and architecture. They may work on public transportation schemes, navigation, retail interior, office setup, and branding. Illustration - Graphic artists create original works using media and various techniques. Most of them have experience studying/working in drawing, animation, or architecture. They collaborate with writers, editors, marketers, and other specialists. What's the difference between UX design and graphic design? A graphic designer takes care of the external side of the product, while a UX designer focuses on the users' experience of using the product. They have many common elements, but there are also significant differences. The goal of graphic design is to create visually attractive products that contain certain information and appeal. It focuses on branding, typography, composition and works on various marketing materials (logo, advertising, flyer, packaging, animation). As for UX design, it includes graphic design, but it works directly on the final product. Its goal is to increase user satisfaction by improving the use, accessibility, and interaction with the product. A UX designer's activities include research, prototyping, and testing. Representatives of these two directions work together and often perform similar tasks. Therefore, it's easy to change positions and move from graphic design to UX design or vice versa, as designers possess the skills necessary for both jobs. What are the advantages of graphic design? It's beneficial for a company to care about the direction of graphic design for various reasons:Brand Recognition - A graphic designer helps the company create/choose the right logo, photographs, graphics. This ensures brand unity in all directions, on various channels that it uses to interact with customers. Think of any successful company and consider how big a role graphic design plays in its branding.Visual Communication - In addition to creating brand identity, graphic design is an important tool for communicating with customers. A photo or text alone cannot convey the message as effectively as graphic design. Therefore, a graphic designer helps the company search for those creative ways that will help them convey the desired information to the target audience. Increased Sales and Competitive Position - Good graphic design makes the company more visible in the market. This is reflected in increased sales and, consequently, revenue. Graphic design has a big impact on consumer behavior, so it really helps the company achieve commercial goals. As you can see, a graphic designer has one of the most important and responsible duties in the company's success. Plus, they receive quite good compensation for this. Therefore, if you're interested in the field of design and want to learn it from scratch, I recommend you join our Graphic Design For Beginners course. The program is built on practice-based teaching methods. Here you'll learn to set up design technically, stylistically, and content-wise, create visuals for brands, properly plan design projects.
