If you're interested in digital product development or simply attracted to the design field, you've probably heard the phrase 'UX/UI design' at least once. You might have guessed there's a difference between the two, but they're so interconnected that it might be hard to distinguish them. In this blog, I want to tell you about these two professions, and let's use the Commschool website as an example. Before we move to specific examples, I think it's important to define what UX and UI mean:● UX Design – User Experience Design ● UI Design – User Interface DesignFor example, to make navigation on Commschool's website as comfortable and pleasant as possible, the UX designer researched and studied user experience, determining things like the layout of necessary pages and buttons. The UI designer, on the other hand, took care of interaction design and the aesthetic aspect of the site, such as button colors and shapes. To break it down further, from a UX designer's responsibilities, you might even see their profession as part psychologist and sociologist, because as I mentioned above, they try to understand your behavior as a user to determine what feelings different website components will evoke and how they will work, for example, this button:[Learn more about the course]The UI designer would focus on the aesthetic aspect of this button to make you more inclined to click it, for example:[Learn more about the course]The distinction between these two professions naturally requires different skill sets. For example, a UX designer should be able to:● Create digital products using design thinking methodology ● Independently conduct & analyze user research ● Develop/improve product concept and design based on research insights ● Create prototypes, test usability, and measure results ● Work with digital product teamsWhile a UI designer should be able to:● Define digital product specifications, visual strategy, and concept ● Manage complex design processes ● Develop design visual characteristics ● Create design systems adapted for various graphic devices ● Implement and consider functional design principles in interfaces ● Handle prototyping, product testing, feedback analysis, implementation, and evaluationThere you have it! I hope I've fully addressed any questions you might have had about this field. I should also mention that if you're interested in the design field, specifically UX/UI design, you can take both courses at Commschool. What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is a profession that uses visual images to convey ideas and main messages to a target audience. You'll encounter this form of communication everywhere in the digital era today - on billboards, product packaging, or mobile applications. Using various techniques and principles, graphic imagery can have a significant impact on our perceptions, emotions, and decisions.Companies connect with their customers through graphic designers. Using text, design, and photographs, they advertise and sell their products and create brand identity. In other words, this field combines art and business, creative process and commercial goals. If you're interested in graphic design and want to develop in this direction, you've come to the right place. Read the blog where I'll tell you more about this direction and introduce you to the diverse career opportunities this field offers. What elements does graphic design consist of? The elements and principles of graphic design include line, color, shape, space, texture, typography, scale, dominance, and balance. Their unity creates a visually striking and attractive image that effectively conveys the main message.Line - It's a component of almost every design and comes in various forms: straight, curved, long, short, narrow, thick... It helps to divide space, as well as to draw attention in a specific direction.Color - It can be said that it's the most important and obvious, most easily noticeable part of the design. It can make an immediate impression because everyone notices and perceives it. Color can be used as a background or in an element (line, shape, text). It creates emotion and character. For example, green is associated with nature, while yellow can evoke positive emotions.Shape - A combination of lines such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle, and other abstract forms. You'll encounter at least one in every design. Like colors, shapes also evoke different associations in people. For example, a circle expresses unity, while a square expresses structure. The color, style, background, and outline of a shape can influence human perception.Space - White or negative space in graphic design refers to the empty space left around or within shapes. It's given great importance because it simplifies and improves the perception of the work for the human eye.Texture - Different materials are now often used in design: paper, stone, concrete, brick, fabric. With these, you can create diverse and interesting three-dimensional images.Typography - When working with text, a graphic designer should consider two factors and the relationship between them: what the text says and how it looks. Typography is the arrangement of text in such a way that it's easy to understand, perceive, and attractive. In this case too, different fonts evoke different emotions. Therefore, it's necessary to choose it correctly to have a strong visual effect on the viewer.Scale - It's used to create visual hierarchy, which makes the image more dynamic. With it, you can more clearly highlight important information and emphasize them.Dominance - Highlighting a part of the design. Outline, contrast, isolation, and other techniques are used for this.Balance - A balanced design leaves a sense of stability, while an unbalanced one can have a dynamic effect. Balance is achieved by correct placement of shapes, colors, lines, and other elements. Harmony - It's one of the main goals of a graphic designer. Good design means that each component of it complements each other and together they effectively fulfill their purpose. However, if everything is similar to each other, the design can turn out monotonous and boring. To avoid this, it's important to maintain a balance between harmony and contrast. What types of graphic design exist? There are different types of graphic and UX design and specializations. Each requires different techniques and skills.Visual Identity (Branding) - This direction works on the visual side of the brand. Its goal is to convey the company's identity using photographs, shapes, and colors. Graphic designers working in this direction create logos, typography, color palettes, images that express the brand. They also develop guidelines, recommendations to ensure identity is protected in any form of use.Marketing and Advertising - Used to sell services and products to create different types of advertising. For example, posters, billboards, flyers, catalogs, packaging, or digital advertising (video, social network post). Designers working in this direction create graphics for marketing strategies and campaigns. They create designs for the target audience, so they need to understand well how the product sells and how to attract consumers' attention.Web Design - Planning and creating the design, structure, and scheme of websites. It focuses on the external side and user experience (UX). Web designers use various visual elements (text, photo, graphics, video) to create easily usable websites for users. Web design is closely related to UX and UI design.Publishing - Selection of typography and art samples (from photography, illustrations, graphic works) for publications. A graphic designer working in this direction works on the visual side of books, newspapers, magazines, and catalogs. They need to know how to use colors effectively, as well as printing and digital publications.Packaging - Packaging not only protects the item, but it's also an important marketing tool. Graphic designers create the model and print-ready file. They need to know well how the printing process works, industrial design and production. They should actively study existing trends, their competitors' strategies to stand out for consumers in this regard.Motion Graphic Design - It's a new direction in graphic design, but rapidly growing and in demand. It creates moving graphics: animations, video games, trailers, credits.Environmental, Interior - It's a multidisciplinary direction that combines graphic, architectural, industrial, interior, and landscape design. It connects people with the environment. Generally, designers working in this direction have knowledge and experience in graphic design and architecture. They may work on public transportation schemes, navigation, retail interior, office setup, and branding. Illustration - Graphic artists create original works using media and various techniques. Most of them have experience studying/working in drawing, animation, or architecture. They collaborate with writers, editors, marketers, and other specialists. What's the difference between UX design and graphic design? A graphic designer takes care of the external side of the product, while a UX designer focuses on the users' experience of using the product. They have many common elements, but there are also significant differences. The goal of graphic design is to create visually attractive products that contain certain information and appeal. It focuses on branding, typography, composition and works on various marketing materials (logo, advertising, flyer, packaging, animation). As for UX design, it includes graphic design, but it works directly on the final product. Its goal is to increase user satisfaction by improving the use, accessibility, and interaction with the product. A UX designer's activities include research, prototyping, and testing. Representatives of these two directions work together and often perform similar tasks. Therefore, it's easy to change positions and move from graphic design to UX design or vice versa, as designers possess the skills necessary for both jobs. What are the advantages of graphic design? It's beneficial for a company to care about the direction of graphic design for various reasons:Brand Recognition - A graphic designer helps the company create/choose the right logo, photographs, graphics. This ensures brand unity in all directions, on various channels that it uses to interact with customers. Think of any successful company and consider how big a role graphic design plays in its branding.Visual Communication - In addition to creating brand identity, graphic design is an important tool for communicating with customers. A photo or text alone cannot convey the message as effectively as graphic design. Therefore, a graphic designer helps the company search for those creative ways that will help them convey the desired information to the target audience. Increased Sales and Competitive Position - Good graphic design makes the company more visible in the market. This is reflected in increased sales and, consequently, revenue. Graphic design has a big impact on consumer behavior, so it really helps the company achieve commercial goals. As you can see, a graphic designer has one of the most important and responsible duties in the company's success. Plus, they receive quite good compensation for this. Do you remember when Tamuna Budagashvili became our lecturer?
Today, graphic design is not just a work of art, but a means of visual communication. From brand logos to application interfaces that we notice and use daily, it's an integral part of our digital and physical world. Therefore, it's important for companies to establish effective visual communication with their target audience and deliver their main message to users in an interesting way.If you're interested in how you can create the best user experience through graphic images, check out this blog. Tamuna Budagashvili, a Commschool lecturer, talks about her profession and experience.Tamuna has been drawing since childhood and always wanted her future profession to be related to drawing and art. Her dream was to have the opportunity to study at the Academy of Arts. The Faculty of Media Arts showed her many ways where she could do many other things along with drawing. Tamuna studied animation, but ultimately continued her work in graphic design and illustration.Tamuna's journey in the art world turned out to be quite diverse. Animation, photography, video, Motion Design, UI/UX design, Art Direction, Editorial Design (in the direction of magazines). Since she loved writing, she also tried copywriting, which was reflected in her last project - she managed to combine her love for writing and drawing and create the most memorable and important moments. Currently, Tamuna holds the position of lead designer in a foreign company and works with her own team."Sometimes people think that drawing and design is an easy thing. But like any other job, it requires work, time, involvement, and research. So be sure to value your time."Profession - Graphic Designer As Tamuna recalls, she was initially very confused until she understood what graphic design meant. However, this gradually became a challenge for her. According to her, the main task of a graphic designer is to provide people with aesthetically processed information. That's why, in Tamuna's opinion, sometimes good design even sells a bad product."If you have a strong desire, you can even overcome what seems impossible to you."Tamuna considers determination as the main skill needed for a graphic designer. It's important to have willpower too - this will help you repeat the same manipulation several times until you achieve the best result. Observing the environment is always a good source of inspiration. Tamuna uses several other platforms in the creative process:Instagram;Artstation - for illustration and digital painting;Pinterest - where it's possible to find inspiration and aesthetics for everything; It's Nice That - to get acquainted with modern trends.Career Path and Opportunities Graphic design has many directions. This can be branding, photo manipulation, printing design, posters, packaging, or typography. Therefore, this field provides many opportunities and the career path is quite interesting and diverse. Tamuna notes that the Commschool course includes basic knowledge, after which students will understand which direction is interesting for them."Year after year, more and more people have a desire to learn graphic design, which naturally increases competition. This is intensified by the active entry of artificial intelligence, but human resources will always be needed. That's why the most important thing is to work on yourself and develop, which makes a noticeable difference in the portfolio."The field of graphic design will also give you the opportunity to work remotely. In Tamuna's case, this is one of the great benefits. She works from home and has a very flexible schedule, which makes her workdays stress-free and leaves her with a lot of free time. This is when she is most productive and has better results in terms of time management.Graphic Design: About the Course Regarding the graphic design course, Tamuna says she will try to share her 10+ years of experience and accumulated knowledge with students. Taking the course will be a challenge for all students, especially for those who have decided to become graphic designers. The program will also interest those who have contact with social media and content, photographers, startup or business owners who want to package their own product themselves; or even those who want to turn their child's drawings into digital posters. At the same time, Tamuna herself expects to learn a lot from students - she will look at many things differently and this will be a great challenge for her as well."It's very natural to have technical problems, especially for those who are using graphic programs for the first time. You may have a well-formed idea, but technically you can't handle it. This is exactly what this course will help us with - let's learn the language of graphic programs so that in the future, learning videos found on different platforms will be completely understandable to everyone."If you're also interested in this program, I'll tell you that during the course you'll learn to use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, to technically, stylistically, and content-wise set up design, create visuals for brands, and properly plan design projects. The practice-based teaching method will give you the opportunity to gain significant experience. In addition, you will receive career support from Commschool - based on the results of the final project, the best graduate will undergo a guaranteed internship at one of the partner creative agencies. So, if you're ready to travel in the creative world, you should definitely take advantage of this opportunity.
